Laura Gagnon, MA Communication

Laura is a proud Anishinaabe kwe (woman) from Treaty 9 territory. Her spirit name is Standing Horse or Niibawi Mishdodem. She the founding partner of Iron Horse Niibawi which translates to Iron Horse Standing and is an Indigenous owned company focused on the security markets across Canada. She leads with a vision rooted in innovation and strategic growth. With a strong background in communication, human rights and Indigenous advocacy, Laura has amassed extensive experience in consultations, negotiations, cultural teachings, language, and education.

Laura’s vision for the company ensures that the duty to consult under Section 35 of the Constitution Act which recognizes and affirms the treaty rights of Indigenous people is upheld in all business dealings. Laura embeds Indigenous values, language, protocols, and knowledge systems into Iron Horse Niibawi’s operations and public engagements. She also ensures that the business maintains cultural safety and considers her role as a sacred duty, and as a cultural guide to guarantee ethical operations are met. Laura holds an undergraduate degree in Communication and Media studies with a minor in Indigenous studies as well as a Master of Arts in Communication.

Laura has worked in the Department of National Defence in the Deputy Minister Jody Thomas’ office, she was an Executive Assistant for Senior Assistant Deputy Minister Mary Luisa Kapelus and is now a Communications Advisor within her role in the Federal Government.

Laura is also a hand drum singer and has partaken in ceremonial events at the Governor General Awards honouring people like Gord Downie, former Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Canadian actor Tom Jackson. Laura is a jingle dress dancer and attends traditional ceremonies as often as she can.
